Your Questions Answered…..

 What are botulinum toxin injections?

Botulinum toxin is a bacterium that blocks the release of acetylcholine, the substance responsible for transmitting electrical impulses that elicit muscle contraction. In medicine, botulinum toxin is injected directly into hyperactive muscles. It has been safely and effectively used for treatment of strabismus (cross eye) and blepharospasm (lid spasm) since the early eighties.

How do botulinum toxin injections work?

Botulinum toxin is injected into areas such as deep frown lines, forehead lines and/or crow’s feet to give the face a more relaxed and pleasant appearance. Wrinkles become smoother or disappear altogether as the muscle can no longer make the facial expressions meaning lines smooth out and new creases are prevented from forming. Due to the small dose used as part of the cosmetic procedure it is exceedingly safe.

How long do botulinum toxin injections take to work?

The initial effects of treatment become visible within 48 to 72 hours. The maximum effect is reached in about 1 to 2 weeks. Your facial expressions will become more relaxed but by no means mask like. The overall result is very natural.

How long do botulinum toxin injections last?

The effect of treatment generally lasts for three to four months. The effect fades gradually and muscle action fully returns. Re-treatment is then required. With repeated treatment the effects often last longer.

What is the difference between botulinum toxin injections and dermal filler injections?

Most fillers temporarily plump up creases but don’t prevent them from getting deeper or stop new ones from forming. Lines occurring at rest such as nose to mouth lines, marionette lines at the corners of the mouth and lip lines are best treated using dermal fillers. Dermal filler is placed beneath the surface of the skin to add volume to the face which botulinum toxin can’t do.

What is dermal filler?

Dermal fillers are classified according to their longevity of effect. Non-resolvable fillers are permanent while partially resolvable fillers are semi-permanent. Fully resolvable dermal fillers meanwhile are non-permanent and include hyaluronic acid which is provided at this clinic.  Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar found in the skin, cartilage, joints and the eyes. You can replace your skins lost hyaluronic acid by using a hyaluronic acid based dermal filler.

How long does hyaluronic acid dermal filler injections last?

Hyaluronic acid is absorbed by your body over time. Correction will reduce gradually until your skin looks like it did before treatment. Most people find improvement still visible at 12 months. With repeated treatment the effects often last longer.
